Is 11:1-10

"On that day,
A shoot shall sprout from the stump of Jesse,
and from his roots a bud shall blossom.
The Spirit of the LORD shall rest upon him:
a Spirit of wisdom and of understanding,
A Spirit of counsel and of strength,
a Spirit of knowledge and of fear of the LORD,
and his delight shall be the fear of the LORD.
Not by appearance shall he judge,
nor by hearsay shall he decide,
But he shall judge the poor with justice,
and decide aright for the land's afflicted.
He shall strike the ruthless with the rod of his mouth,
and with the breath of his lips he shall slay the wicked.
Justice shall be the band around his waist,
and faithfulness a belt upon his hips.

Then the wolf shall be a guest of the lamb,
and the leopard shall lie down with the kid;
The calf and the young lion shall browse together,
with a little child to guide them.
The cow and the bear shall be neighbors,
together their young shall rest;
the lion shall eat hay like the ox.
The baby shall play by the cobra's den,
and the child lay his hand on the adder's lair.
There shall be no harm or ruin on all my holy mountain;
for the earth shall be filled with knowledge of the LORD,
as water covers the sea.

On that day,
The root of Jesse,
set up as a signal for the nations,
The Gentiles shall seek out,
for his dwelling shall be glorious.

Lk 10:21-24 Jesus rejoiced in the Holy Spirit and said,
"I give you praise, Father, Lord of heaven and earth,
for although you have hidden these things
from the wise and the learned
you have revealed them to the childlike.
Yes, Father, such has been your gracious will.
All things have been handed over to me by my Father.
No one knows who the Son is except the Father,
and who the Father is except the Son
and anyone to whom the Son wishes to reveal him."
Turning to the disciples in private he said,
"Blessed are the eyes that see what you see.
For I say to you,
many prophets and kings desired to see what you see,
but did not see it,
and to hear what you hear, but did not hear it."

 Dn 1:1-6, 8-20
In the third year of the reign of Jehoiakim, king of Judah, King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon came
and laid siege to Jerusalem.
The Lord handed over to him Jehoiakim, king of Judah,
and some of the vessels of the temple of God;
he carried them off to the land of Shinar,
and placed the vessels in the temple treasury of his god. The king told Ashpenaz, his chief chamberlain,
to bring in some of the children of Israel of royal blood
and of the nobility, young men without any defect,
handsome, intelligent and wise,
quick to learn, and prudent in judgment,
such as could take their place in the king's palace;
they were to be taught the language and literature of the Chaldeans; after three years? training they were to enter the king's service.
The king allotted them a daily portion of food and wine
from the royal table. Among these were men of Judah: Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah.
But Daniel was resolved not to defile himself
with the king's food or wine;
so he begged the chief chamberlain to spare him this defilement. Though God had given Daniel the favor and sympathy of the chief chamberlain, he nevertheless said to Daniel,
"I am afraid of my lord the king;
it is he who allotted your food and drink.
If he sees that you look wretched
by comparison with the other young men of your age,
you will endanger my life with the king."
Then Daniel said to the steward whom the chief chamberlain had put in charge of Daniel, Hananiah,
Mishael, and Azariah, "Please test your servants for ten days. Give us vegetables to eat and water to drink.
Then see how we look in comparison with the other young men who eat from the royal table,
and treat your servants according to what you see."
He acceded to this request, and tested them for ten days; after ten days they looked healthier and better fed than any of the young men who ate from the royal table.So the steward continued to take away
the food and wine they were to receive, and gave them vegetables. To these four young men God gave knowledge and proficiency
in all literature and science,
and to Daniel the understanding of all visions and dreams. At the end of the time the king had specified for their preparation,
the chief chamberlain brought them before Nebuchadnezzar.
When the king had spoken with all of them,
none was found equal to Daniel, Hananiah,
Mishael, and Azariah;
and so they entered the king's service.
In any question of wisdom or prudence which the king put to them, he found them ten times better
than all the magicians and enchanters in his kingdom.

11/17/11 LISTEN to SHERWOOD OKLEJAS comment re CRYSTAL CATHEDRAL's future without the Crystal Cathedral. Both he & Mike Nason (former Hour of Power producer) testified that they believed the crystal cathedral ministries (ccm) could not survive without the actual building (both oopposed the catholic buyout & were in favor of the chapman buyout) . I wasn't sure what the formal tie he had with Chapman was, but he apparently was connected both to chapman (as an employee or board member?) & to the crystal cathedral as a congregant.

11/17/11 LISTEN to DIANE HIGHUM TESTIFY re CRYSTAL CATHEDRAL's last minute decision to choose the Catholic diocese of OC as the preferred buyer of the church. Judge Kwan wanted a "prove up" by the crystal cathedral as to whether their decision was a "sound business decision" & one of the issues was non-monetary, namely that the bylaws of the crystal cathedral required that it remain irrevoceably a religious building (the cathedral itself, that is) . And when asked by CC attorney Winthrop if they would have chosen the catholics even if there was no such bylaw she indicated they would have done so, irregardless, implying the choice of the catholics was based on a desire for the cathedral to remain a house of worship. By the way, I don't think the crystal cathedral attorneys were expecting Judge Kwan to require a "prove up", nor was Ms. Highum expecting to testify.

I went online for more info re Diane & found out she is a Harvard graduate with a M.D. in psychiatry: "Diane Highum, M.D. Psychiatrist Diane Highum, MD is a staff psychiatrist currently working at the Amen Clinic in Newport Beach, CA. She graduated from Harvard Medical School and went on to complete a four year NIH funded research fellowship at Harvard prior to obtaining post graduate training in psychiatry. She spent the first two years of psychiatric residency training at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, and completed the final two years of training at UCI in Orange, CA. She has worked in both the private and public sectors, and has treated a wide variety of psychiatric disorders. She has spent a significant portion of her career as an academic psychiatrist as a faculty member at UCI. Immediately prior to joining the Amen Clinic, she worked full-time as a research psychiatrist. 11/17/11 HOMELESS MINISTRIES LEADER (Rob Ekno?) SPEAKS OUT AGAINST THE SCHULLERS...& against the Catholic buyout (he & a small group of crystal cathedral attendees/employees were adamantly against a catholic buyout & in favor of a chapman buyout despite the fact that a catholic buyout would mean the cathedral remains a house of worship forever, while chapman buyout would not provide such a guarantee). I was a bit taken aback by the vicious nature of this small group which included Rob Ekno, Bob Canfield, & James Richards, among a few others. Ekno dubs himself as a man who came out of homelessness to lead homeless ministries at thecrystal cathedral. I googled him online & he actually has many facets, including a wannabe hollywood persona (see http://site.robekno.com) , & while Rob may be a decent person, he's an example of a new type of character that's seeping into the crystal cathedral environment & in some ways creating a "gangsta" atmosphere (a certain kind of character that has a strong sense of entitlement to the cathedral grounds, & are very strong-willed, tending to want to take-over& drowned others out. And I think their resistance to the Catholic diocese is due to their realization that it probably means they will not have the "run of the place" they so quickly enjoyed from day 1 at the CC. I mean I run into people who just join the CC and they occassionally look at me as if to say, "Who are you?" (Despite I've been around here since '84).

RICH MOUW IS GENEROUS re HINDU CHILDREN IN HEAVEN "...We all believe—at least A Mohler and I believe—that millions of Hindus will be saved without accepting Christ; we only disagree about how many, and how old they were when they died. Baptist theology says that a Hindu child who dies in infancy is saved because that child is not yet fully accountable. My Reformed theology says that accountability is not the issue—all children are conceived and born in sin and are deserving of the harsh judgment of God. If they make it in, then, it is not because they have some moral advantage over their adult counterparts, but because the Sovereign God of the Scriptures “worketh when, and where, and how he pleaseth.”

re JAY SMITH & ENGAGING ISLAM: MY EXPERIENCE

[ this seminar covers all sorts of topics having to do with Islam, for evangelical Christians, fascinating stuff..this guy has an incredible head full of knowledge about anything & everything having to do with Christianity & islam &, here's a few of my notes] "So I'm at this "Engaging Islam" conference, led by Jay Smith at a church in Upland. Jay, apparently, has a lot of experience in debating Muslims with the hope of turning them to Christ, & particularly at "Speakers Corner" in London (I've been there once, back in1988 when I was doing a semester in Spain, & we went to London for spring break). This is a two-day conference, but I missed the opening session last night. This morning Jayintroduced himself to the group, mentioning he grew up in India, and now spends a lot of time in England (but apparently his nationality is American).   Jay began by talking about different types of evangelists: some who never actually do evangelism (couch potatoes),others who are gung-ho & feel guilty when they don't ("rambo evangelists"), then those who think they need to have the answer to every question before they can do evangelism ("professional students"), as well as those who don't think their evangelistic efforts make a difference ("whipped dogs"), among others.  He notes that there are two basic types of evangelism; 1)Irenic (relational) & 2) confrontational, and that most people should be irenic, not confrontational (unless you're specially trained).   Some people object to mentioning Christ to Muslims (who may be co-workers, etc) because they are afraid of losing friends, but Jay says, don't worry, b/c Muslims do not encounter enough positive,moral,Christianity in America. They see a lot of porno &hear profanity, sometimes even amongst so-called Christians & this gives them the wrong impression. 2) afraid you can't answer all questions. Be honest & tell them "I'll get back to you" and recommens Answer-Islam.org, 3) always carry a Bible & give chapter & verse when quoting it. Muslims don't want religious opunion. He mentions Koran 29.46 ("Don't argue w/ Christians") & 4.136 "Believe in the Bible". He mentions that "only 15% of Muslims know Arabic so that when some people claim the only true Koran is the Arabic Koran, ask them if the other 85% are false Muslims.  Importance of "Son of God"in Bible...which is a big sticking point for Muslims. They ask how can Jesus bethe son of God. How can God become a man? They say its "unbecoming." Jay says, conversely, how can God be limited? If he wants to be human, He can do it, & he finds it AWEsome that God would do so. Jay also mentions points in Bible where God did appear on earth, not just as Son of God, but in the burning bush, etc. Jay questions the so-called "Chrislam" movement (an attempt to merge Christianity with Islam). He talks about going to mosques and how some formerMuslims can feel the "demons" when they go back.   Somebody asked a question about Fuller & their attempt to compromise the Bible in order  to reach Muslims (taking out "Sonof God"). Jay mentioned Dudley Woodberry(I remember sitting in afew mission classes led by Dudley). Apparently there's a name for this movement, called EWI (encountering the world of Islam?). I don't remember if Dudley used that acronym when I was there (I found this online: "Fuller Theological Seminary in California is using a federal grant from the Department of Justice to launch a one-million-dollar interfaith program with Muslims. This program will focus on building the broken relationship between Christians and Muslim, helping Christians to gain deeper understanding of Muslims. The program's code of ethics restricts proselytizing for two years and affirms a mutual belief in one God..."
http://www.christianpost.com/news/objection-to-fuller-seminary-s-interfaith-program-6947/
) ; also ("The underlying assumption for both documents is obvious, i.e., that both Muslims and Christians believe in one God. Both are monotheistic religions. Both have common traditions and common roots. As is stated in the Introduction to the first document: "Thus, despite their differences, Islam and Christianity not only share the same Divine Origin and the same Abrahamic heritage, but the same two greatest commandments." As a result, it is assumed that both Christians and Muslims not only believe in one God, but they worship, serve and believe in the same God. Although the outward observance of each religion is very different, at the heart they are essentially the same, or at least equivalent. Such teaching is extremely popular right now. It is commonly accepted in many religious circles, even Christian, even among some evangelicals. However, it is not a Biblical concept, nor is it consistent with the orthodox, historic faith of the Christian church. In a word, it is heresy. Let us explore why we are asserting this..."
http://www.answering-islam.org/Authors/Deleon/who_you_gonna_serve.htm
)

Jay is absoltely AGAINST removing Son of God (or God as Father) to appease Muslims. He mentions an article in Christianity Today (current issue) that talks about it (with reference to Rick Brown versus George Houssney I found a little info on them at Rick Brown
http://strategyleader.org/worldview/worldvbrown.html

"Georges Houssney – Lebanese born, is Author of “ Engaging Islam” and Director of Horizons International in Boulder, Colorado..."
http://biblicalmissiology.org/author/ghoussney/

JAY also takes about "Issa" (name for Jesus in Koran) versus "yeshua" (used elsewheee). He says Issa is not arabic, but a borrowed word, and that the Jesus of the Koran doesn't die on the cross, nor does theJesus of the Koran say the right things at the right time (as opposed to the Jesus of the Bible who is chronologically in sequence with events of the place & time he was in) .  He talks about Muslims trying to trap Christians in arguments about the Trinity, asking us where the word is found in the Bible. Jay says don't worry about that argument but turn instead to the fact that "Elohim" in the Old Testament is actually a plural word (ie "gods"" he says it actually means "three or more") and how do Muslims explain that? (He notes its also a tripping point for Jews & the Shema, Deut 6.4?).   He also says its important NOT to use the King James Bible when debating Muslims (even though he loves the King James ) because of 1 John 5.7 which is not found in early manuscrripts (and Muslims know this & will use it to trip up Christians) He says use NIV w/ Muslims. He says the best verse in defense of the Trinity is Matt 28.19-20 "Baptize in the name of the Father, Son, & Holy Spirit." And also you can counter-argue with Muslims that their word for "oneness" (Tawhid) is not found in the Koran. Healso added something allah being connected to the "hubal" (hubal is the formal name for allah, & further connected thhis to some verse about "3 daughters" which he says are  "satanic verses" (he went very fast over this & I didn't catch everything, but its something you can "google" FMI (for more info).

   The next point is that Muslims accuse the Bible as being more violent than the Koran and quote a verse from Judges(?) Where God gives the command to kill every man, woman, & child. Jay says this was a specific command for that time & place & it was actually God doing the killing. The Muslims also point to verses such as Jesus saying "Î didn't come to bring peace but a sword" (Matt 10.34?) which Jay says is paradoxical because that sword is actually the sword used against us as Christians, not Christians using the sword versus others. It's the guarantee that we will be persecuted for righteousness sake (he also points out that the "sword" is also used simply in reference to a common "dagger" in the Bible that people used for eating & cleaning their fingernails, etc (like a pocket knife?)  Muslims may also point to the "crusades" & the "inquisition" as proof of Christians being violent, but Jay says  this could also be people "fraudulently using Christ's name" which is a good point..namely that actions that are a contradiction to Christ, but are done in the name of Christ, are fraudulent. ...(to be continued)

...then Jay moved on to to the issue of Muslims claiming the koran to be perfect in every way (ie "inimitable", "superior", "no contradictions", etc). He said that one time in response to such a claim he simply started reading Psalm 23 & asked the Muslims "How is your Koran superior to this?" And that this quieted them. He mentioned the name Theo Noldeke for further reference. As for other claims such as the Koran being most universal & a depiction of paradise he mentions the problem of the degradation of women in Islam.

As for the "more peaceful" than Christians claim, Jay noted that there are 149 sword verses in Koran & that the only hospitality commanded in the koran is from muslims to muslims, nobody else; whereas we are called to help strangers, love neighbors etc, As for the claim that Koran is "collated perfectly" Jay note that Muhammad died in 632 yet the Koran was not even commplete as of 705. He mentioned "palimpsests" that reveal the koran has been re-written (he mentioned Keith small as a source & "no complete koran until 10th century") and in a shocking statement he said the "Koran was not solidified until 1924."

After a break Jay began to compare the supporting consistent evidence for a Bible that has not changed over the centuries (in contrast to the koran). He began talking about NT manuscripts (approx 24,000 in existence). He went thru the list of names of the different manuscripts (flashback to seminary) & the different materials they were written upon, noting that the the sinaiticus of the 4th century was written on long-lasting parchment that was the equivalent of 52 gazelles. He mentions "eyewitness accounts" as well as"hostile witnesses" et. He talks about almost 20,000 translations of the Bible and then, most strikingly, about the early church fathers &their letters (Clement,Eusebius, Hippolytus, Justin Martyr, Ireanaeus, Tertullian, Origen) and notes that  there are numerous quotes in their letters that match the Bible, and when put together collectively they almost reproduce the Bible.

He mentions "tablets". (Armana, Ebla,Mari, Nuzi) that corroborate the Abraham story, as well as other parts of the Bible, and that the "stones cry out for us..." He said something about Genesis 14.8 & trade routes & about Sodom & Gomorrah, and something about the Ebla tablet corroboration (apparently not many manuscripts speak of a sodom & gomorrah)

He talks about the Hittites (modern day turkey & iraq) who invented chariots & their lineage of Medes (destroyed Babylon?) & Kurds . He mentions the Assyrians. The last point I heard him make (unfort. I had to leave a little early) was something about the book of Daniel & the "4 kingdoms" and he mentions how the name balshazzer was corroborated archeologically (having to do with the "Nabonidus Drum). All of this, by the way, was accompanied by overhead powerpoint with more details than I can cover here. Apparently there is also an audio of it for free online (not sure where yet) & also a dvd for a nominal fee.

All the details & info was fascinating but also helpful was Jay's enthusiasm for the subject. You could feel his interest in it, both intellectually & emotionally. He would often make a good point & follow it with "Don't you love our Jesus?" Or a little cluck & "Boy I love my Bible, don't you?" This guy knows Arabic as well, so he would periodically add a point about Arabic to everybody's astonishment. HE also had Q&A After each session. I wanted to ask questions but held back, b/c I thought people might think they were too  political in nature (I have a website devoted to stopping terrorism) . If I said "terrorism" for example I can just imagine everybody thinking "Oh this guy thinks every Muslim is a terrorist." No I don't. By the way, think about how much of a "sweeping generalization" some people do in reverse when they say "Americans think all Muslims are terrorist."

I figure if Jay is fluent in Arabic & a loyal American, he may even be an advisor for the US government on Muslim issues. But the audience defines the nature of the Q&A and I didn't want to step on any toes.

MY REVIEW OF TURIN HORSE,

PRODUCED BY BéLA TARR

https://s3.amazonaws.com/readers/2011/11/11/bela_1.jpg

(Pic: The"Hungarian master of miserablism", Béla Tarr;

(Viewed at the Chinese 6 on Hollywood Blvd, AFI film festival )

Re the TURIN HORSE, what an intense film, ...totally silent, B&W ...begins with some credits, I think it said January3, 1889, (?) quote of Nietsche (in reference to his horse parable)..horse refused to move, owner starts whipping it, Nietzsche stops the man, ..(just words talking about it, not an actual scene, something about "says his last two obligatory words, & then lives ten more years"), ..then footage begins with a man on a buggy pulled by horse,..this actually lasts for a long time, with intense music (stringed instrument) see...[youtube=]

There is stark black & white scenery, very windy, leaves blowing,  horse struggling to keep going ...finally arrives at an old run down house & stable..there's a woman here...takes a while to figure out the relationship, but becomes clear, she's his daughter. They rarely talk. In fact, there was no dialogue for about the first 15 minutes of the film. Finally, the first two words are "It's ready" , when she puts a boiled potato (nothing else) on the table for him to eat. He eats it with his bare hands. Apparently potatoes are all they have to eat.

Then she says, vaguely "What's it all about?" (Referring to life in general?) And he says "I don't know. Go to sleep." Next morning, she's the first awake, opens door to howling wind, walks outside w/ 2 wooden buckets, fills them at the well. She comes back in & he sits up on the bed. He being elderly, she helps dress & undress him every day. I also notice a rough pair of wooden shoes by his bed. They go out to the barn, but the horse is not cooperative. The wind is always howling (funny, during the Q&A somebody asked "How long did the storm last?" Thinking it was a real wind storm. Ha ha. The famed producer, Béla, said, "That was a stupid ol' wind machine." ).

Back in the house, the old man chops wood with an axe. The daughter hand washes clothes. Every scene is prolonged & the sound emphasized, even when they are just sitting, staring out the window. It is very intense , even powerful in a simplistic way, with none of the usual quick transitions & predictability of so many films. The one surprising piece of dialogue is the old man saying "f--k" every now & then (was that word even used pre-1960's? Seems like even foreign films feel obliged to include the f word in their movies. The word is SO OVER-USED everywhere these days, from ghetto grade school kids to corporate executives, to Jay Leno talking to President Obama) it has become boringly mundane, although because it seems anachronistic here, it has a little humorous punch to it, & I heard a few laughs) Now the old man is punching holes on a belt.

The next day, after a similar morning routine (getting water from the well, checking on the horse, taking a shot of brandy), an old man with a cane stops by and asks for a refill of his brandy bottle, which he pays for. Then the two men sit & converse for a while. The visitor says something about the "self god" & about the world being "debased"...& something about accepting "no god" ("neither god nor godly") ..he goes on & on, the father says very little. Then he stands up & walks out, the last shot of him thru the window walking slowly with his cane into the distance, wind blowing fiercely.

The brandy becomes a daily ritual, with prolonged shots of the bottle in the morning after father & daughter take a shot. One day (& this is all in a total span of 5 or 6 days) a group of gypsies come riding up in a wagon. They take water from the well. The father tells the daughter to go out & scare them away, but they start playfully harassing the daughter. So the dad comes out with an axe & threatens them, but not before one of them gives the girl a book. Back inside the girl opens the book & starts reading aloud. It may be a Bible. It has religious language of some sort, maybe Revelations, nothing that I immediately recognized.

By the way, all the dialogue is in Hungarian with English subscripts. Also, the horse has stopped eating. Sick? Giving up? Then, the well runs dry, so they pack up apparently intending to leave. And they are shown traveling into the distance. I thought this might be the end, but then they are shown coming back to the cabin, without explanation. Maybe they realized it was too far, that there was no hope with a weak horse, but the visitor with the cane walked somewhere (couldn't they walk as far?). So they unpack their things.

Since they have no water, they eat their potatoes raw (can't boil it, but why not bake it, they still have fire), with bare hands. The lamp goes out. He tells her to fill it with oil. She says, "it's filled." NO wick? He tries.
It won't start. He says "Let's go to sleep." Now I am writing without the notes, a day later. I can't remember the exact ending but I remember her face staring out the window, hopeless.

Then Béla came back out (see http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D0ee67Xdwfc ). He's a bearded fellow, somewhat short, a little gruff. I think everybody felt a bit stunned by what they just saw. This was not your formula film made for commercial success. I recognized it as something much different the moment it began. INTENSE is the best word I can think of. POWERFUL, also (fragment for effect). I had several questions but would have needed to speak to him personally abut it. That's the thing I dislike about the large Q&A Sessions. You have a certain "type" of people in the audience who limit authentic conversation.

So I just listened. Somebody asked why this is his last film? (Which he apparently announced ). He scoffed a little & said in his style of honesty he was "sick of this question" but then said he's come "full circle" and doesn't want to "make s--t" .He apparently is content with the quality of what he's done and doesn't want to degrade his legacy by just putting out film for the sake of producing film. Fair enough. I respect that.

One lady asked whether he was influenced by artists (such as Flemish, I think she added)  and if so, who? He kind of shrugged, and seemed to jeer a little bit, and simply said yes he was influenced by painters but did not want to name any (elsewhere, he does say he's influenced by painters in a interview, see below) .He seemed to want to avoid over intellectualizing the movie, which I appreciate. It is what it is.

So many in the movie-watching atmosphere around Hollywood want to prove their cinema prowess by asking or answering questions with cinematic jargon, but it too often misses the larger point & purpose of WHAT IMPACT, if any, does this film have on a person intellectually, emotionally, spiritually, affectively, etc? Walking away from the movie & a year or ten from now, what difference will this movie have made for me as a person and for people in general ? Will it make me a better person? That's what I always try to ask after a movie (& I rarely go to movies anymore) .

More often I read about them or hear about them. Too often they have a specific liberal agenda. I didn't get that feeling with Turin Horse (albeit, apparently, Béla is a "proud liberal" & even criticized his own government for its opposition to liberal intellectuals). Bella seemed to want to talk about the simple & plain life & death aspects of the movie (i.e. re death "It's acceptable but unacceptable", as simple as that). And that about sums it up, You really get a very stark & honest feeling about life & death & everything else. There's NO AMBIGUITY. A bottle of brandy is a bottle of brandy. A horse is a horse. A potato is a potato. A woman is a woman. A man is a man. It was sort of REFRESHING.I almost started thinking of reformed theology as I watched & wondered if the Hungarian Reformed church influenced Béla at all, but apparently he's not a believer.

I would definitely recommend this film, but you have to be WILLING to suffer with it. Your average movie-goer will quickly complain, "This is boring..." and will notice the lack of sexuality & nudity (thank you), and thankfully a lack of homosexuality,  lack of profanity (except the anachronistic F word by the old man) , lack of violence (except the threatening gesture with the axe by the old man), & lack of almost all cheap techniques used today to captivate today's audience. I walked OUT on two other AFI films because of the junk they dumped on the audience (most of whom accept it, but not I), but I stayed for the entirety of Turin Horse. It was honest, intense, & powerful, a very rare simple but true message. Thank you Béla Tarr.

As for the religious ramifications, even though Nietzsche is known for his "death of God" comment & apparent atheism or agnosticism,& even if Bella is in agreement with such, this film did NOT fill me with hopelessness, but JUST the OPPOSITE. It shows that we are TOTALLY at the MERCY of something else much larger than ourselves. In Turin Horse, perhaps Bella portrays the "something else" as merely nature, but TO ME it points to GOD: Father-Son-&-Holy Spirit.

A portion of another review:

'....universe's absolute implacable indifference to humanity? The Nietzsche prologue, seemingly tangential to the main action, enigmatically bolsters the effect of parable." bolsters the effect of parable." Almost as an indirect answer to those questions, the "Director's Notes":"Our film follows up this question," wrote Tarr in 2007. "What did in fact happen to the horse? Olsdorfer, the carter, and his daughter live out their lives on their farmstead. They subsist on hard work: their only source of income is the horse and the cart — that's what they live on. The father takes on carting jobs, his daughter takes care of the household. It's a very meager life and infinitely monotonous. Their practiced movements and the changes in seasons and times of day dictate the rhythm and routine which is cruelly inflicted on them. The film portrays mortality, with that deep pain which we, who are under sentence of death, all feel."

Béla said "... [the Hungarian] government despises intellectuals "because they're liberal and oppositional; they call us traitors to the fatherland." Tarr also criticizes the government's severe cuts to support for the film industry, which has prompted the Hungarian producers union to counter that Tarr actually receives "significant subsidies" himself. Even as government supporters criticize Tarr for his comments, others are going after him for distancing himself from the interview: "I'll not fight, discuss or argue in this way. I find it very degrading that all this is smearing the reception and success of the film and dragging it down to the level of everyday politics."

Opening scene of Turin Horse is on YouTube gives you a good feel for what I am talking about (same link as above) :
  (By the way, if you search YouTube, there also seems to be a spoof clip, with some musicians & a dolphin, which has nothing to do with this film)

Here's an interview with Béla, in which the interviewer asks him why people come away with a religious feeling from his films despite Bella's disbelief in God. Bella talks about the "dignity" of all human beings. He also mentions being influenced by painters.
