Calvin College rallied from an early 13-point deficit and beat Carthage College 71-68 Friday in a first-round game of the eighth annual CCIW/MIAA Classic at Van Noord Arena in Grand Rapids, Mich.

Carthage (2-2) raced to an early 22-9 lead, but Calvin battled back and eventually took a five-point lead at 62-57 with 6:28 left in the game.

Calvin still led by five (64-59) with 4:23 left when Malcom Kelly took over for the Red Men. Kelly was fouled on a 3-point attempt and made all three free throws. He followed with a breakaway layup to tie the game at 64-64 and the teams went neck-and-neck down the stretch.
