(pray4) 12/14/11 MAN KILLED by OFF-DUTY OFFICER who FELL ASLEEP AT WHEEL, CRASHED THRU STARBUCKS: (Story by Subha Ravindhran) "FILLMORE, Calif. (KABC) -- An off-duty Los Angeles County sheriff's deputy fell asleep at the wheel of his SUV and crashed into a Starbucks in Fillmore Tuesday night, killing a man. The victim, 30-year-old Sergio Mendez, was a former Marine who had enlisted in the National Guard The crash happened shortly after 7 p.m. Authorities said Michael Cedarland who has been with the sheriff's department for seven years, lost control of his truck and traveled about 300 feet from the road into the building located on th 600 block of Ventura Street. The car broke through the east wall of the store, plowed through the customer lobby area and came to rest... at the front door. Mendez was pinned between the vehicle and a wall, according to investigators .
